Amanda Campbell has been writing independent theatre and music reviews on TWISI since 2007. TWISI got its start in Toronto (Tkaronto), and has been based in Halifax (Kjipuktuk) since 2011. Its primary mandate is to help foster and celebrate Canadian Theatre, especially Atlantic Canadian Theatre, through thoughtful reviews, engaging conversations with artists, and providing a platform for artists to share their own ideas and thoughts about the dynamic state of the theatre in our communities. Amanda is also interested in encouraging the theatre critics of the future through her TWISI Jr. program.
Keeping TWISI Paywall Free
TWISI will always be a free resource for the Canadian Theatre and Music Community and its audiences, with absolutely no paywalls that limit the artists’ ability to market their work and find new audiences. Instead, TWISI works on a PWYC Subscription Model where Patrons subscribe to the blog via Patreon, which keeps the service free for everyone.
Why It Matters
TWISI was one of the very first theatre blogs in Canada, and it is currently one of the only places where plays and musicals are reviewed consistently in Nova Scotia. Subscribing helps to keep Arts Coverage alive and free in Nova Scotia, and allows Amanda to travel across Nova Scotia to write about the shows that are created in our communities.
How You Can Be Part of It
The PWYC Model is a mixture of a typical newspaper subscription, where subscribing to a newspaper doesn’t guarantee favourable reviews, but subscribers help to keep the newspaper in business, and The Highland Arts Theatre’s Radical Access Program, where the community funds the resource, and in turn allows it to be available to everyone free of charge.
