Once Upon a Theatre Collective’s newest show Waltz of the Fae: Sure As Death takes us to the dark world of the faeries once they have been abandoned by their human believers. It is an exciting place to begin, with ample potential in the imaginative and playful hands of Jessica Barry, Lesley Smith, Gina Thornhill and Meghan Hubley. There are some beautiful moments here including a haunting musical offering, their four lovely voices layering on top of one another tightly, as they anoint one another with paint and glitter. There was also a very compelling ritualized faerie dance which evoked a sense of deep history and tradition for these peoples. Yet overall, I felt like the four creators were circling around the story, without truly living it, without showing us the depth of the world they had created and bringing us into the lives of rich, distinctive and unique characters. These four girls are delightful to watch, their chemistry is deep and apparent, but I would love to see them explore more unchartered territory in the creation of their characters. They’ve created this fanciful world, it’s theirs to inhabit.
