Falcon Powder’s God’s Beard! (The Only Sketch Show That Has Ever Happened), which plays as part of the Toronto Fringe Festival through July 11th, 2015, is a beautifully constructed sketch show that has its audience laughing nearly nonstop for a full 52 minutes.

Jim Annan, Scott Montgomery and Kurt Smeaton build this show around the exploration of friendship, specifically following the story of three storm chasers, who believe that because they have pals, they are invincible and will literally live forever. They find themselves facing “God’s Beard,” the converging together of dozens of storms in one place and their own impending morality. The other sketches are lacquered onto this one evolving story, building on its themes in continually creative and unexpected ways.

The details in the sketches are tightly woven like pieces to a hilarious puzzle, often finding their relevance in the stories being told in surprising and silly ways. Most of the sketches are constructed like very short, very funny little plays, with the same sense of stakes, character development and arc of storytelling that would be expected in a longer piece. The difference is that the sketches have punchlines, but, while they are exceeding funny, many also evoke moments of more solemn emotions, but then quickly slide back into the thick of the comedy. Annan, Montgomery and Smeaton are talented actors, as well as comedians, which brings their characters to immediate three dimensional life, regardless of how short the sketch is. They are also skilled in physical comedy and joyous in their singing and their dancing.

I find great sketches are best when discovered for the first time, in all their plot twists, absurdities and silliness, so I will not go into specific details, but instead I encourage you all to seek out this terrific and hilarious show and get your tickets now.
