Bill Wood is Magic. This is the truth. Bill Wood, most famous as a member of the Halifax-based sketch comedy troupe Picnicface, melds his talents as a comedian and as a magician with his delightful relish for wonder and seeks to wow his audience in tiny intimate ways. While making rings, coins and cards disappear into thin air and reappear into ENTIRELY impossible places, Wood encourages his audience to appreciate the fleeting moments when they feel genuine amazement and believe, if only for a split second, in the power of very immediate and palpable magic.
I found myself watching both Wood and the reactions of the two youngest members of the audience, two boys, neither of whom looked older than six, and their unbridled joy and the sheer magnitude of their delight, which they hadn’t yet felt pressured by convention to rein in or suppress altogether. I realized that the true magic of Bill Wood is his ability to remind adults of these feelings that came so naturally to these two children. He sweeps out our cynicism, our sardonic, post-modernist skeptic and, instead, celebrates the communal pleasure of fun and laughter. I think people leave happier for having spent a half hour in his company.
